Raw MDF

Medium Density Fibreboard or MDF differs from particleboard in that the wood chip is reduced to a fibre which in its raw form is similar to cotton wool. Resin is added in the manufacturing process to produce a panel that has a smooth surface on both sides and an even density profile throughout which makes an ideal substrate to router and groove.

Applications

MDF is cabinet-making and shopfitting industries. Like particleboard it is often overlaid with both melamine papers and timber veneers. MDF tends to be specified for cupboard doors and lends itself to vinyl doors where the surface has had a profile routered into it. MDF is also used extensively for handyman projects as it offers a higher quality surface for paint treatments.
